Why are these tools used?

Hello everyone, please explain something simpler or something, so that I can understand why to use and install these tools Framasoft / PeerTube / search-index · GitLab and Framasoft / PeerTube / instances-peertube · GitLab ? I understand that if I want to connect my instance with others, I just need to subscribe to one of these PeerTube instances. And it turns out that my copy will also be on this list? Again, there is no understanding, for example, there are 992 instances in the list, it turns out that if I subscribe to these instances, then according to documentation I should allocate a place for them on my VDS right? Also, I should look through everything to choose a similar topic, but in my opinion this is not realistic?) What do those who consciously use the federation say, how can they understand everything in a simple way? :grinning:

This is the code behind https://sepiasearch.org/

If you want to host your own search index, you can.
This index could be used to:

  • provide a web interface for people wanting to search video globally
  • provide an API for servers (you can configure a index on each peertube instance, defaults to the one provided by framasoft)

2 use case for providing such service:

  • have your proper list of instances, with your own moderation rules
  • help to balance the load, to avoid every peertube instance to use the same index

Same for PeerTube instances

This index could be use for instance that enable the feature to automatically follow all listed instances.

There is a button « Add » on top of PeerTube instances

You just have to fill the form: PeerTube instances

Note: instances.joinpeertube.org is moderated, if your instance does not fit the ToU, it can be removed.

I did not understand the question.
Information about instances you follow, and instances that follows you, will be stored in the database (server infos, accounts infos, videos infos, …).

But the video content will not be stored on your server.

Except if you want to share some bandwidth, to help others instances, and you enable the redundancy feature. This is optional.

To understand, first read carefully https://joinpeertube.org

The way i like to explain: with Peertube, you can create your own network.
Each actor can choose between:

  • provide all the available content
  • or provide thematic content
Or… anything between. You have the power of building the ecosystem you want.

Thank you, really, it’s priceless. Now I understand.
Just thoughts:
I looked through many copies there, but somehow, with the exception of a couple, I didn’t see anything special. Mostly copyright from other resources, films, programs, songs. I think it would be good if each copy carried its own creativity).
